University of Virginia
Associate Professor or Professor and Co-Lead,
Community-Based Health Equity (CBHE) Research Program
Department of Public Health Sciences and the Cancer Center

The Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) in the UVA School of Medicine and the NCI designated University of Virginia Cancer Center (UVACC) are jointly seeking applicants for a tenured or tenure-eligible faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor to conduct research that advances the goals of addressing rural cancer disparities. The successful faculty candidate will be appointed within PHS with an opportunity to co-lead the highly successful Community-Based Health Equity (CBHE) Research Program. Candidates must have a proven track record of successful federally funded research in cancer prevention and control in rural populations and a scholarly record of collaboration in multidisciplinary investigator teams informed by community outreach and engagement.

Launched in 2016, the CBHE research program represents a strategic research priority of the UVACC and PHS and their commitment to pursue new discoveries and innovations aimed at reducing the burden of cancer in underserved rural, racially and economically diverse communities in the Commonwealth and throughout the US Southeast region. Through strong support and investment from the University, CBHE has grown to include Virginia-based research locations in Charlottesville, Christiansburg and Danville, and includes researchers from disciplines within the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Engineering, and Arts and Sciences. PHS offers a vibrant academic home with access to rich datasets and support services for research including geospatial analysis, advanced expertise in healthcare claims data, digital health and telemedicine, public health genomics, and community engagement. Through this current hiring announcement, the UVA Cancer Center continues its record of investment in successful population scientists and decades-long tradition of scientific leadership. High priority scientific programmatic areas within the UVA Cancer Center are broad and include: socio-demographic cancer disparities, energy balance/obesity, access to cancer screening and follow-up care, prevention and control of tobacco and obesity, and the care of cancer survivors in diverse communities.

The Department of Public Health Sciences provides comprehensive and multi-disciplinary scientific and analytical services to the University of Virginia School of Medicine through its Divisions of Biomedical Informatics; Biostatistics; Translational Research and Applied Statistics; and Patient Outcomes, Policy and Epidemiologic Research. The Department offers two Master’s degrees, a MS in Clinical Research and a MPH. Successful candidates will contribute to the design and implementation of the graduate education curriculum; teach intermediate and advanced graduate level methods courses, conduct research, and advance scholarship in their area of expertise.

Successful candidates will have a MD or PhD or other terminal degree with a sustained record of research in cancer prevention and control and current peer-reviewed funding such as by NCI or equivalent. Candidates are particularly sought who have the following:

  • A strong peer-reviewed publication and funding record relevant to rural cancer disparities.
  • National and preferably international recognition in a field of cancer prevention and control, and population health as evidenced by involvement in academic societies at a national level and participation in external peer review panels.
  • Success moving scientific discovery into new research directions and applications in patients and populations.
  • Experience working with community advisory boards and stakeholders in an engaged research process.
  • A collaborative style that fosters and supports teamwork, change and innovation.
  • Ability to pursue high standards related to one’s research, clinical investigations and service, and other areas of responsibility.
