Cancer Epidemiologist

Open Rank Faculty – Precision Health for Populations

University of Virginia School of Medicine and
University of Virginia Comprehensive Cancer Center

The University of Virginia's 2030 plan recognizes Precision Health as a major societal challenge and an opportunity for multidisciplinary work that draws on our existing strengths. In partnership, the Provost and the Deans of applicable schools are making plans for multiple coordinated faculty recruitments to strengthen the research community focusing on Precision Health for Populations across the University. Faculty recruits will receive support from the Provost and from their school and will participate in the Precision Health for Populations Initiative.

Pursuant of this initiative, the Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS), School of Medicine, at the University of Virginia (UVA) and the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center (UVACCC) invites talented researchers to join an exemplary team of investigators to advance precision health strategies directed to cancer prevention and control and reducing cancer disparities. This is part of a major Grand Challenges research investment of over $50M in Precision Medicine/Precision Health.

Applicants will be sought at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor with a terminal degree (e.g., PhD, MD, ScD) to apply for tenure-track/eligible faculty positions supported under a newly announced Precision Health initiative. One of three anticipated appointments are expected to include: Cancer Epidemiologist (see below); as well as Cancer Community Interventionist, and Cancer Digital Health / Behavioral Health Interventionist.

Cancer Epidemiologist

Sought are researchers trained in cancer epidemiology to conduct innovative research to advance the science of cancer epidemiology and to work collaboratively to apply these discoveries as personalized prevention/risk reduction strategies and approaches. The driving goals of this UVA sponsored Precision Health Initiative are to broaden our ability to effectively prevent and intercept cancer processes or events in diverse populations. As such, we envision the scope of this work to be multi-level, involving biological, environmental, individual and upper stream societal factors. Faculty hired under this initiative will have a primary appointment in PHS and membership in the UVACC’s Cancer Prevention and Population Health research program. The successful faculty candidate must have a proven track record of sustained peer-reviewed funded research in cancer etiology, risk reduction, screening, early detection, and/or survival. Candidates must have a scholarly record of collaboration in multidisciplinary investigator teams informed by community needs and with key focal sites within communities such as healthcare practices, community centers, organizations, or neighborhoods. High priority will be given to candidates with expertise in one or more of the UVACC priority cancers including lung, breast, GI, prostate, cervical or melanoma.
